What is Community High School?
Community High School began operation in 1985 and serves as a thriving alternative high school and is an integral part of the Grand Forks Public School District. Approximately 85 students attend Community High School and earn standard high school credits and receive a high school diploma upon graduation. Community High complies with the subject curriculum guides of the Grand Forks Community High School is an NCA accredited high school which is open to students who are 16 years of age or older. At age 16, school attendance is not mandatory; therefore, the assumption is that any student enrolling at Community High School is coming out of a desire to complete the requirements for a high school diploma. The responsibility for academic work, attendance, and behavior rests entirely on the student. Because students are choosing to stay in school past the mandatory time frame, they may also elect to be full- or part-time students. Office hours of operation are from 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. Community High School follows the same vacation schedule and storm days as the other Grand Forks School District high schools.
Our Philosophy and Vision
Our philosophy and vision include these statements “…individual success is achieved through student ownership of responsibility for academic performance, attendance, and behavior, to allow for flexibility and innovation…to address the educational, psychological, emotional, physical, and ethical needs of students…to accommodate highly individualized, specialized, and technological demands…it is our intent to offer a distinctive and valuable education to our unique students.”
Staff
The staff at Community High consists of a principal, part-time counselor, part-time social worker, part-time career counselor, four full-time teachers, and up to five part-time teachers. See the link below to access teachers’ email addresses.
Academics
Classes run three hours in length with a maximum of 15 students per session. Students must be present in class for 60 hours (75 for science and lab classes) and successfully complete course requirements to attain ˝ credit. Students will be suspended for a minimum of 20 days if they exceed 10 hours of absence per 60-hour class (12 ˝ per 75 hour class). In order to promote independence, responsibility for course work, behavior and time requirements are placed directly upon the students.
Community High School requires the same classes as the other two high schools in the Grand Forks district. However, we only required a ˝ credit of health, 1 credit of Physical Education, and do not require a speech credit. A really important aspect of the coursework at Community is that we use the same textbooks and curriculum as the other high schools in the Grand Forks district.
Community High School offers a variety of electives courses in Family and Consumer Science, Diversified Occupations, and Business Education. We have 27 different elective courses to choose from!
Students
Many Community High students fit the category of “students at risk,” but despite this designation they are as capable as other high school students. However, many have unique circumstances, which conflict with, or interrupt their educational plans. The alternative school offers another opportunity to complete high school and obtain a high school diploma. Any student, who is 16 years of age or older and wants to attend, should contact the school office for eligibility requirements.
