Mini - Sleds
We suggest getting pruning shears to assist in cutting the popsicle sticks. Tin snips do not work as well. Some of the popsicle sticks tend to splinter when cut with snips. The balsa wood strips are quite easy to cut with a regular scissors.
We used hot mini-glue guns very carefully. Have adults cut the pieces ahead of time and put parts for one sled in a Ziploc baggy. This time-saving step makes it easier and quicker to get the materials out to the students. Also, have a few models made ahead of time to use as examples. An adult stationed at a glue gun area will prove beneficial, too. Tacky glue also works sufficiently, plus, there's no worry in burning fingers that get too close!

Perhaps you could carve a team out of soap?
