Scratch Art
Directions

Goals/Objectives:
Further develop line quality in artwork and emhasize
contrast.
Materials
Needed: scratchboard, wooden scratch tools, demonstration models
with variety of lines and techniques.
Procedure:
- Students are
handed sketchpaper (2 sheets) the same size as the scratchpaper
that they will be using.
- Through
demonstration, the class will consider basic lines in different
compositions - students will also be highlighting the lines of the
main composition.
- When drawings
are balanced, consider how to add highlights by stippling, or
crosshatching, similar to print-making. They then will be redrawn
over the top of the scratchpaper to make an impression to follow
for "Scratching."
- Scratching
tools are then handed out and students carefully "etch" their
drawings, revealing the contrast underneath. More line work is
encouraged to emphasize the contrast of highlighted
areas.
When finished,
these can be mounted on tag or matt board for displaying. They should
be covered with paper when storing to avoid any further "scratch"
marks on the artwork.
